Rotation Sites

All interns rotate through various facilities in the Lake Charles area. Below is the current list of sites that are under contract with McNeese State University to provide internship experiences.

Clinical
The clinical portion of the program will provide interns with the opportunity to contribute as a member of the healthcare team, not only in the general medicine area, but also in the specialized areas of renal dialysis and nutrition support. In each rotation interns will work closely with registered dietitians to gain a better understanding of the function of the RD on the healthcare team. The following are the clinical rotations provided during the program:

  • Lake Charles Memorial Hospital (general medicine; diabetes; skilled nursing facility; nutrition support; psychiatric; oncology; cardiovascular; long term/acute care)
  • Christus St. Patrick Hospital (cardiovascular; renal; rehabilitation; ICU/CCU)
  • Jennings American Legion Hospital (general medicine)
  • Davita Health Care Lake Charles Southwest (renal)
  • West Calcasieu-Cameron Hospital (general medicine)
  • Southwest Louisiana War Veteran's Home (general medicine)

Community
Interns will gain experience in outpatient counseling, as well as with the WIC program. Time will be spent leaning about special nutrition needs of low-income women, infants, and children. Interns will counsel clients to encourage good nutrition and eating habits as well as teach classes on a variety of topics such as prenatal  nutrition. Diabetes education is also a part of the community nutrition experience.

  • Lake Charles Memorial Hospital Diabetes Education Center
  • Christus St. Patrick Hospital (outpatient counseling)
  • American Diabetes Association/Louisiana Lion’s Camp
  • Calcasieu Parish Health Unit (WIC)

Administrative/Food Service Management
In the administrative/food service management portion of the program, interns will apply their knowledge of food systems management to learning the dietitian's role in the administrative area of dietetics. The application of this knowledge will help the intern learn to plan, organize, staff, direct, and control food preparation and service activities as well as related administrative tasks. The administrative portion of the program includes the following rotations.

  • Jennings American Legion Hospital
  • West Calcasieu-Cameron Hospital
  • Southwest Louisiana War Veteran's Home

Staff Relief
Two weeks are spent in staff relief. Interns will take on the responsibilities of a dietitian and experience being "the RD."  This experience will help promote self-confidence in basic nutrition assessment and counseling skills as well as help to promote professionalism in the field.
